So the good part is, I now have a job at Taylor Design in Stamford, CT. The bad part is, it is only freelance (for now). It’s 40 hours a week…for at least the month of March, but I have a feeling that they will need my services for the next month as well. I’m working on a massive WordPress site with them. A lot of more of the advanced WordPress stuff that I’ve never tried before (or even heard of) is being used on this site. It’s fun, and just a bit challenging, which is the perfect mix.

So the method that got me in and an interview was the “long application process” meaning, I didn’t just submit an auto application through monster.com. I sent in a letter saying I thought their design firm looked interesting and that I would make a good addition to their team. I got a call and things went good from there.

All I got from monster.com is a lot of dead ends and random insurance companies sending me calls and emails about working for them because I’d make such a “great” insurance salesman or something. Yeah..big waste of my time.

Anyway, I’m glad I get to work at Taylor Design, even if it is only temporary. It’s a good experience and there are a ton of nice people there.

Today marks the second official day of my job hunt. I sent out another three applications today. All were to local businesses I heard of from friends. The process takes a while, I admit…but you don’t want your cover letter to be a template. They just blend in with everyone else’s. That is why I worry a little about doing the “auto-apply” they have on sites like monster.com. If the option is there to apply manually, I think it would work out better in your favor. Some of the applications seem to have personalized questionnaires to learn more about the applicant. Something that you can’t fill out if you do it through monster.

It’s still way too early to know for sure…at least for me, but for now I will be doing a mix of manual applications and automated ones using monster. I’ll report my findings once I find a job.
